5 Web Design trends in 2020

2020 is another exciting year for web design, while many new web technologies have been introduced this year. We are going to talk about five web design trends that are playing an important role in 2020.

VR with WebXR API

Perhaps this is directly the most exciting news regarding web design in 2020. The WebXR API is now available in Chrome. WebXR is the next version of WebVR, which includes support for augmented reality devices, sensors, and controllers. Web developers can create a fully immersive experience of VR/AR on their website, without worrying about the fragmentation of VR headsets, controllers, and consoles.

Dark mode with P-C-S

This year loads of people preferred dark color schemes when browsing on the web. This is for various reasons, such as eyestrain, battery saving, a calmer mind, etc. Some even try to use plugins to force it on every website. For this reason, a new CSS feature called ‘preferred-color-scheme’ is introduced. It detects if your browser is in dark mode. If so, the color scheme is changed automatically. So, this year we are going to see websites use dark color themes or start offering dark mode switches much more often.

3D websites with WebGL 2.0

Since the stable release of WebGL 2.0 in 2017, we keep seeing more and more stunning web designs utilize it. Three.js is one of the most popular WebGL JavaScript libraries that drives thousands, if not millions, 3D websites. Web developers can now work with shaders and create amazing visual effects, games, and animations easier and faster than ever. Therefore, we are definitely going to see more awesome WebGL websites at the end of the year 2020.

Awesome animations with SVG

SVG and SVG filter is one of the fastest-growing web design trends this year. It allows less experienced developers to create a stunning and complicated effect without a single JavaScript line needed. Realistic water reflection or squiggly text effects are products of SVG filters. For example, you can combine SVG with CSS to create animations and scale responsibly. This in combination with a small size or load, is the reason why it's gaining such popularity.

Minimal design

Website loading speed and responsiveness are now part of the search engine rankings. Minimal design, again, is continuing to be a strong trend. With fewer elements to load and less JavaScript to process, minimal design can make your website load faster, while still providing an elegant look.
